IMS TK KNMMMIILE IVEI OLNE CNMMttE Pip tan I MUSIC Don Henley Packs Show With Old And New By SANDY STUART Staff Writer After a five-year hiatus following the breakup of the Eagles, Don Henley is back on the road and having fun. Appearing at the Garden State Arts Center last Friday night, Henley proved he is just as talented performing solo as he was as a member of one of one of the most popular rock groups of the 1970s. With the aid of a tight, eight-piece band, Henley played a long list of songs, including some old Eagles tunes and several from his recently released album, "Building The Perfect Beast." Henley opened the show with the title track from the "Perfect Beast" album, followed by the older "Dirty Laundry," a cynical tune about the ethics (or lack thereof) on television news programs. Many of the songs from the "Perfect Beast" album have gotten considerable radio air play since their release last spring, and were greeted with enthusiasm by the audience. "Sunset Grill," "Not Enough Love In The World," "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" and "The Boys of Summer" are just a few selections Henley played from what is turning out to be a hit- packed LP But, perhaps as testament to the popularity of the Eagles, the wildest the plaintive "Desperado." The real crowd-pleaser, however, was the final encore performance of "Hotel California," complete with a dramatic tango danced by Henley and one of his female vocalists.

Adding to the enjoyment of the Henley show was a cleverly designed set that was worthy of a theatrical performance. Behind the instruments stood a starkly modern building facade, all lines and angles, and behind that was a screen. By using different combinations of lights on the building and screen, a variety of moods could be created to match the music. Triangular-shaped banks of lights that dangled above the set contributed to the high-tech appearance. Opening the show for Henley was the energetic Katrina and the Waves, whose pop-rock music has been climbing the charts this summer.

Many listeners know Katrina only for her upbeat "Walking on Sunshine," but the Kansas-born performer proved that the other selections from her debut album are every bit as enjoyable. Most notable was "Do You Want Crying," which is destined to be the group's next hit single. Other selections included "Get On Board" and "Red Wine and Whiskey." Throughout the performance, Katrina danced, pranced, jumped and kicked all over the stage, obviously enjoying herself. In a sense it was too bad the performance was in a concert hall and not a dance hall, because Katrina and the Waves is the type of band that can get an audience on its feet. Don Henley Returns Former Eagle Don Henley gave a rousing performance at the Garden State Arts Center on Friday, Aug.

16, in a program which combined his new material with old Eagles favorites. applause was reserved for the old Eagles hits that had been co-written by Henley. He took his old position behind the drums for "Witchy Woman," which was first performed 13 years ago, and "Life in the Fast Lane." Away from the drums, Henley sang In ont of country's oMtai Innt.
